UPDATE: Study Results:
This was a small study, but 2 of 3 women who completed the series of 10 treatments demonstrated an improvement in their thyroid condition based on pre- and post-thyroid bloodwork.
It was also interesting to note a possible correlation between sacral dysfunction, combined with cervical and clavicluar lesions, and hypothyroidism.
In conclusion, the results of the study suggest that osteopathic manual therapy can be beneficial in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Further research would be necessary to make more definitive conclusions.
HYPOTHYROIDISM STUDY USING OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENTS
****THIS STUDY IS NOW FULL****
I am completing my osteopathic studies and am required to write a research paper on a particular health condition from an osteopathic perspective. I have chosen to research Hypothyroidism.
There are 2 possible ways to participate in the study:
1. I am seeking to recruit 5 women who have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and who do not have other significant illnesses. Applicants must have TSH/T4 bloodwork results within 3 months of start of study showing hypothyroidism and proof of medication used to regulate thyroid function (if taking). Each participant must have consent of their family physician to re-test thyroid blood results on completion of study. These women will receive a series of 10 osteopathic treatments over a period of 5-7 weeks (there is no cost to participants for this).
2. I am seeking any number of women of any age who have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and who do not want to follow up with post-study blood work as required above. The women in this stream will receive 1 assessment and treatment session.
GOALS:
To assess the structure of each participant to evaluate if there are common structural dysfunctions.
In the case of participants who receive 10 treatments, to evaluate if osteopathic treatment can influence thyroid function.
Participants must agree to have their results used in my research paper. Your identity will remain anonymous.
I am starting the study immediately. If you are interested in participating in this study and feel that you meet the above criteria, please call or email me.
